| Featured University: UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE NEWARK, DELAWARE 19716 phone: 302-831-2792 Web: www.udel.edu Tracking its origins back to 1743, the University of Delaware began as a private academy. Known as the Academy of Newark. in 1833, the University was chartered by the State of Delaware and the first classes were held in 1834. During that first year, Nathan W. Munroe acted as principal, but was later replaced by Eliphalet W. Gilbert, who was named as the colleges first president from 1834-1835. Under the next president, Richard S. Mason, the first commencement exercises were held in 1836. In 1921, nearly two centuries after the school was founded, the University received its first accreditation by the Association of Colleges & Universities of the Middle States and was officially named the University of Delaware. Moving forward to the present, the enrollment is now over 20 thousand students, with over 4,600 walking in the 2006 graduation ceremonies. Known as the "Fightin Blue Hens", supporters of this school display their "blue and gold" proudly. |
